ACCESSIBLE NORTHLAND

Sometimes if you are disabled, or have a disabled family member, it is not easy to be sure that places will be accessible, though CCS Disability Action aims that businesses, communities and individuals should consider accessibility at all times.

On these pages, we have compiled a list of venues, activities and locations that are set up to consider the needs of disabled people. It may help you make decisions about where to go and what to do – whether it is for recreation, shopping, business or accommodation.

This is not a definitive list, and we are aware that changes may occur that mean that places are no longer as accessible as they have been. We’d welcome any comments on these suggestisons, and if you have other places you recommend as easily accessible for disabled people and their family/whanau, please email us or phone 09 4371899.

ACCESS WHANGAREI - A GUIDE TO ACCESSIBLE FACILITIES

Whangarei aims to create the ultimate living environment for its residents and visitors to enjoy.  This access map has been designed to help you find your way around the city, listing mobility parking spaces, accessible amenities including toilets, accommodation, conference, retail and dining options and other useful information for visitors.

The map was developed by the Whangarei District Council's Disability Sector Reference Group, with assistance from Whangarei Girls High School and the wider disability community.

Hard copies of the map are available from:

  • CCS Disability Action, 291 Kamo Road, Whangarei, phone 09 437 1899, fax 09 437 0209 or email Valerie Wong
  • Whangarei District Council, Forum North, Rust Ave, Whangarei, phone 09 430 4200, fax 09 438 7632.

DoC has a great resource on its site. While it is not only about Northland, we think it’s a great resource for the disability community. Check out www.doc.govt.nz/templates/MultiPageDocumentTOC.aspx?id=42803 for a downloadable pdf booklet with maps of accessible walks all over the country. Northland is well represented, with the Kauri Park Loop walk at Trounson Park, Tane Mahuta walk in Waipoua Forest, Manginangina Kauri Walk, Manginangina Scenic Reserve, Rainbow Falls Walk, Kerikeri Basin, Ruapekapeka Pä Walk, Bay of Islands and Uretiti Campground and beach, Whangarei all offering some degree of access for wheelchairs.
