ACCESSIBLE AUCKLAND

Disability Strategy: Objective 9
Support lifestyle choices, recreation and culture for disabled people

Sometimes if you are disabled, or have a disabled family member, it is not easy to be sure that places will be accessible, though CCS Disability Action aims that businesses, communities and individuals should consider accessibility at all times.

On these pages, we have compiled a list of venues, activities and locations that are set up to consider the needs of disabled people. It may help you make decisions about where to go and what to do – whether it is for recreation, shopping, business or accommodation.

This is not a definitive list, and we are aware that changes may occur that mean that places are no longer as accessible as they have been. We’d welcome any comments on these suggestions, and if you have other places you recommend as easily accessible for disabled people and their family/whanau, please email us or phone 09-4149780

RECREATION
All recreation and leisure centres in the Auckland region have been audited for their accessibility. Please contact your local recreation centre for further information on whether you will find it accessible.

A young girl's joy at being on her first swing is captured by a camera crew.

Liberty Swings have been specially designed to allow disabled children to experience the joy of swinging. Supported by Variety Club, they have been installed – or are about to be installed – at the following parks:

Auckland City Rocket Park, Mt Albert, Grant Muir 353 9576
Auckland City Mt Richmond School, Joe Govender
Auckland City Reserve at Okahu Bay, Grant Muir 353 9576
Waitakere City Hart Domain, Vitasovich Rd
Auckland City- yet to be installed Cornwall Park, Grant Muir
Manukau City - yet to be installed Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga

PARKS
We have undertaken accessibility audits of most Auckland Regional Council parks. Most of the parks do not have web information on accessibility. However, there is a very good guide to limited mobility access at the Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens.

While the next reference isn’t strictly about Auckland, we think it’s a great resource for the disability community. Check out www.doc.govt.nz/templates/MultiPageDocumentTOC.aspx?id=42803 for a downloadable pdf booklet with maps of accessible walks all over the country. Unfortunately the only listing in Auckland is the Kaitoke Hot Springs track – and that’s on Great Barrier Island!

Auckland Zoo: Take a ride on the wild side

People with restricted mobility could now find travelling the Auckland Zoo a "ride in the park", thanks to two new mobility scooters. To read the full media release and more information, please click here

Reports below are from the disability community. Please let us know of any great parks that your family enjoys:

Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga
Built with children with a disability in mind. However, ground cover is currently being changed as it is not accessible.

Hart Park, Vitasovich Rd, Henderson
Accessible playground with good ground cover. It has a liberty swing, but people need to have a key to use the swing. There is one Mobility park in the shopping complex right next door to the park, though this is not very easy to see. No toilets at the park; you have to got to the toilets at the shopping complex quite a distance away.
